Westmeade Elementary Library

The flags of 33 different countries hang in our gymn. Our student body is made up of students from these countries. The flags remind us that this is a small world after all! Though we have many faces we are one family. Our goal in the library is to help students live together in a global learning community. In the process they will learn

  • to love literature, and let it make us laugh, cry and think
  • to be curious, and think critically,
  • to access, use and evaluate information
  • to respect each other, our library, its contents, and different points of view
  • to work hard and enjoy the satisfaction that hard work brings!
  • to love learning, and to become "life-long learners."

Volunteer Opportunities

Contact the librarian (email above) if you have an hour or two which you could volunteer each week! Especially helpful times are from 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Checking in and checking out as well as help with shelving, covering books, mending books, creating displays are greatly appreciated! Adding books to the computer system, are just some of the projects volunteers can do.

Media Literacy

Media literacy refers to the ability read and evaluate material that we read and see each day. Click here for a list of the required skills.

Library Rules

Students may check out 2 books as long as they are in good standing and have no overdue books. One book should be an AR title to practice their reading. The other selection may be anything they wish to read! In addition students may check out a magazine to take home and read overnight! These are returned the next morning.

Our library has only three rules of behavior.

1. Be courteous

2. Be responsible

3. Be safe!

We begin each year talking about how if we observe these three rules we won't need any other rules! We discuss what it means to be courteous, responsible and safe and then use specific situations to decide which rule it exemplifies or which rule it breaks. If your student loses or damages a book, he will be responsible for replacing it.

Usually books turn up. Sometimes a student has brought a book back, but failed to check it in, and it gets shelved while it is still checked out in his/her name. Sometimes the book gets mixed into the classroom library and is found at the end of the year. We will communicate about the book so that you know it is missing, and decide on a course of action.

Your student may check out two books unless the teacher specifies otherwise. The books circulate for two weeks. You may also check out books under your student's name. When this happens -- your student can still have two books that are books of his/her choice.

Students will always be asked to check out one book at thier reading level, but the second book may be anything they desire. That means the book may be too difficult for them to read or it may be too easy! We do not always understand why a child chooses a particular book, but our purpose is to help children connect to the books they need.

Accelerated Reader

AR is an incentive program for students to read independently. Students read books that are at their reading level and then take tests on the computer to demonstrate mastery of the books content.

What AR does;

Students set AR goals with their teachers and when they meet the goal in a 9 week period, they are rewarded with prizes and a party. Each spring we participate in the Sounds Reading Club. Students who complete their goals during this period are treated to a party and prizes as well as reconition form teachers and peers.
